What first-timers get wrong in Okinawa

Book a car. Outside Naha's Yui Rail there is no railway on the island, and the bus north takes the best part of two hours. The Okinawa Expressway runs Naha to Nago for roughly a thousand yen and spares you Route 58's crawl. Tapping a contactless card on Yui Rail caps at 800 yen a calendar day, which beats the 1,000-yen paper pass unless you need its full twenty-four hours.

What's actually worth your time in Okinawa

Churaumi Aquarium in Motobu earns the two-hour drive from Naha for the Kuroshio tank alone, where whale sharks pass a wall of acrylic. Shuri Castle burned in October 2019; the rebuilt Seiden's red exterior is back and its interior reopens to visitors on 23 November 2026. Sefa-utaki, the Ryukyu kingdom's holiest site, is a cleft between rocks rather than a building. Kokusai-dori is a souvenir street, no more.

Okinawa's museums, and which one to pick

The war is the subject here. The Prefectural Peace Memorial Museum at Mabuni in Itoman charges three hundred yen and stands where the fighting ended; the Himeyuri Peace Museum nearby, built entirely around the testimony of conscripted schoolgirl nurses, opens every day of the year. The Former Japanese Navy Underground Headquarters at Tomigusuku is tunnels you walk through. The Prefectural Museum and Art Museum in Omoromachi shuts Mondays and runs late on Fridays.

Okinawa with kids, realistically

Ocean Expo Park wraps Churaumi in free dolphin shows, a manatee pool and Emerald Beach, so one paid ticket anchors a whole day for under-tens. Resort beaches string jellyfish nets across the swimming area from May to October, which matters because habu jellyfish are real here. Rental cars need child seats reserved in advance, and outside Naha's monorail there is no rail at all, so plan naps around driving.

When the weather turns in Okinawa

Typhoons here are not drizzle: they close bridges, cancel ferries and sometimes shut the airport, so the plan should be indoor and inland. Gyokusendo, the limestone cave beneath Okinawa World, keeps a lit walkway running the better part of a kilometre underground. DMM Kariyushi Aquarium sits inside the Iias mall at Toyosaki, minutes from the airport. Orion's Nago brewery tour ends with a cold glass.

When to go to Okinawa

The month to avoid is July — around 30°C (86°F) with roughly 23 rain days. Prices and crowds track the weather here: January is the sweet spot, July the month most people skip.
