What's actually worth your time in Kanazawa
Kenrokuen costs 320 yen, but the move is arriving before the gates officially open, since the garden lets you in free from as early as four in summer until 6:45, then clears everyone out to buy tickets. Kanazawa Castle's rebuilt Hishi turret was joined without nails. Higashi Chaya's teahouse rows look right at eight and wrong at noon. Myoryuji, the Ninja Temple, admits nobody without a phone reservation.
Kanazawa's museums, and which one to pick
The 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art is a low glass circle with no front or back: its Public Zone, including Leandro Erlich's swimming pool seen from above, is free from nine to ten at night, while the ticketed exhibition rooms close Mondays. The D.T. Suzuki Museum is three rooms and a mirror-flat water court, built for sitting rather than looking. Ishikawa's crafts museum covers Kutani ware and Kaga yuzen dyeing.
Kanazawa after dark
Katamachi is the drinking quarter, and the Kurumazaka alley behind it packs small izakaya, standing bars and snack counters into a few blocks near the Sai river. Higashi Chaya's geisha houses do not take walk-ins; Kaikaro and Shima open as daytime museums instead. City buses largely stop around eleven, so a night across town ends in a taxi rather than a stroll back.
What to eat in Kanazawa
Jibuni is the local dish, duck dusted in flour and simmered with wheat-gluten fu and wasabi in a dashi that thickens as it goes. Omicho Market is where the kaisendon rice bowls happen at breakfast, and nodoguro, the fatty blackthroat seaperch, is the fish worth the surcharge. Kanazawa with kids, realistically
The 21st Century Museum was built for children to run through, and much of it costs nothing, including the free Public Zone and the pool viewed from below. Kenrokuen's gravel paths take a pushchair and Kanazawa Castle Park's lawns take the running. The Loop Bus is a flat 220 yen, 110 for children, and reaches nearly everything, which removes the long walk from the station.
