What to eat in Copenhagen
Smorrebrod is a lunch dish eaten with a knife and fork, never a snack: Fru Nimb inside Tivoli charges 90 to 140 kroner an open sandwich, while Cafe Halvvejen serves three for 89. Torvehallerne's twin glass halls cover porridge, smoked fish and tacos. Copenhagen after dark
Danes start early and drink outdoors when the weather permits at all. Kodbyen, the old Vesterbro meatpacking district, packs bars and clubs into former butchers' halls with music running to five on Friday and Saturday. Jaegersborggade and Elmegade in Norrebro are the calmer version. Because bar prices are high, buying beer at a kiosk to drink beforehand is completely normal rather than furtive.
What's actually worth your time in Copenhagen
Tivoli opened in 1843 and the gardens, not the rides, are the point; its wooden Rutschebanen from 1914 still carries an onboard brakeman. Entry is 145 kroner on weekdays and 155 at weekends, with an unlimited ride pass at 245 on top. The Little Mermaid is small, mobbed and five minutes. Rundetaarn has a spiral ramp instead of stairs, built for horses.
Copenhagen's museums, and which one to pick
The Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek is Carl Jacobsen's brewery fortune turned into antiquities and French sculpture, arranged around a domed winter garden of palms that is worth the entry by itself. SMK covers the Danish Golden Age, Designmuseum Danmark tells the story largely through chairs, and the National Museum holds the Viking material. Louisiana, thirty-five minutes north by train to Humlebaek, justifies the day trip.
