A street bowl of bun bo Hue costs around 30,000 to 50,000 dong, and a plate of banh beo less than that. Citadel admission is 200,000 dong for adults, while the four-site combination covering Minh Mang, Tu Duc and Khai Dinh runs 530,000. Bia Huda in a local quan is roughly 20,000 a bottle. Scooter hire sits near 150,000 a day excluding fuel, and short Grab bike hops stay under 30,000.
Hue after dark
By Vietnamese standards this city turns in early. What passes for a scene is the Pham Ngu Lao and Chu Van An block, closed to traffic on weekend evenings, where bars and plastic beer stools run until roughly midnight. Trang Tien Bridge cycles through coloured LEDs after dark. The older option is a ca Hue boat on the Perfume River, where singers perform chamber songs and passengers float paper lanterns downstream.
What to eat in Hue
Bun bo Hue belongs to breakfast, not dinner, and a proper bowl carries cubed pig's blood plus a slick of shrimp-paste chilli oil. Com hen is built on thumbnail clams dredged from the river at Con Hen islet and served barely warm. Banh khoai arrives with a thick peanut and fermented-soybean sauce rather than fish sauce. On the first and fifteenth of each lunar month, vegetarian com chay stalls take over.
Hue with kids, realistically
Walking the Citadel means unshaded gravel for short legs, so arrive at opening or late afternoon and take the electric shuttle cart that loops the inner enclosure. Children usually prefer Thanh Toan's tiled covered bridge and the paddy lanes around it, an easy bicycle ride east of town. Pavements in the streets around Dong Ba are parked solid with scooters, which defeats strollers; a carrier works far better.
When the weather turns in Hue
October and November bring the real rain, and the low roads out toward Kim Long near the river flood in a bad year. Long An Palace, the upper covered floors of Dong Ba market and the tarpaulin-roofed incense workshops at Thuy Xuan all stay dry. Many Hue cafes sit inside garden houses with deep verandas built for exactly this. A royal-cuisine cooking class fills three hours and ends in lunch.
