What's actually worth your time in Hue

The Citadel is half restoration and half open grass, because the 1968 Tet fighting flattened most of the Forbidden Purple City, so weight your ticket toward the tombs instead. Minh Mang is symmetrical and calm, Tu Duc reads like a poet's overgrown garden, and Khai Dinh hides ceilings of smashed porcelain mosaic behind blackened concrete. Thien Mu Pagoda keeps the Austin sedan that carried Thich Quang Duc to Saigon in 1963.

Hue after dark

By Vietnamese standards this city turns in early. What passes for a scene is the Pham Ngu Lao and Chu Van An block, closed to traffic on weekend evenings, where bars and plastic beer stools run until roughly midnight. Trang Tien Bridge cycles through coloured LEDs after dark. The older option is a ca Hue boat on the Perfume River, where singers perform chamber songs and passengers float paper lanterns downstream.

Hue's museums, and which one to pick

The Museum of Royal Antiquities occupies Long An Palace, an 1845 ironwood hall dismantled and moved here, holding Nguyen court robes, enamelware and bluish porcelain that the emperors commissioned from Chinese kilns. Admission is bundled into the Citadel ticket, so nobody should pay twice. Hue with kids, realistically

Walking the Citadel means unshaded gravel for short legs, so arrive at opening or late afternoon and take the electric shuttle cart that loops the inner enclosure. Children usually prefer Thanh Toan's tiled covered bridge and the paddy lanes around it, an easy bicycle ride east of town. Pavements in the streets around Dong Ba are parked solid with scooters, which defeats strollers; a carrier works far better.

When the weather turns in Hue

October and November bring the real rain, and the low roads out toward Kim Long near the river flood in a bad year. Long An Palace, the upper covered floors of Dong Ba market and the tarpaulin-roofed incense workshops at Thuy Xuan all stay dry. Many Hue cafes sit inside garden houses with deep verandas built for exactly this. A royal-cuisine cooking class fills three hours and ends in lunch.
