What things cost in Milan
A 90-minute urban ticket is 2.20 euro, a 24-hour ticket 7.60, three days 13 and a week 17. The Duomo alone is 12 euro, with the museum 14, the rooftop 19 by stairs or 22 by lift, plus a booking fee of a euro or so. An aperitivo with buffet is ten to fifteen euro and effectively covers dinner.
Milan after dark
Aperitivo starts around half six and the drink price carries a buffet, which in Navigli is effectively the meal. Brera is polished and expensive, Porta Venezia and Isola younger and queerer, Corso Como the club stretch. The city empties in August when whole streets of restaurants shutter for two or three weeks, so check before travelling then rather than after arriving.
What to eat in Milan
Milanese cooking is butter and saffron rather than tomato: risotto alla milanese, a bone-in veal cotoletta fried in clarified butter, ossobuco with gremolata, and cassoeula in winter. Luini has sold fried panzerotti behind the Duomo since the 1940s. Aperitivo buffets in Navigli and Brera serve enough food to replace dinner. Panettone belongs to Milan and the historic pasticcerie make it from late November.
Milan with kids, realistically
The science museum's submarine tours have a minimum age and must be booked separately, but the Leonardo galleries and transport halls suit most ages. MUBA at the Rotonda della Besana is built for under-tens, and Parco Sempione backs onto the castle. Transport is the catch: the newer M4 and M5 lines are step-free, while many original M1 and M2 stations offer stairs only.
When the weather turns in Milan
The Galleria's glass-vaulted arms connect the Duomo to La Scala without stepping outside, which is the single most useful wet-weather fact in Milan. The science museum is a full day. Fondazione Prada's Bar Luce, designed by Wes Anderson, is a destination in itself. Rinascente's top floor looks straight at the cathedral's flank. Milanese autumn rain is heavy and sustained rather than passing.
