What's actually worth your time in Milan
The Duomo's terraces are the ticket that matters here: 19 euro by stairs or 22 by lift puts you walking among the spires and flying buttresses, against 12 for the cathedral floor alone. Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II is a free covered walk-through. The Sforza Castle courtyards cost nothing and hold Michelangelo's unfinished Rondanini Pieta. The Navigli canals are an evening, not a sight.
Milan's museums, and which one to pick
Leonardo's Last Supper is seen in fifteen-minute slots of about thirty people at Santa Maria delle Grazie, with tickets released in dated batches that vanish within minutes and no walk-ups; it closes Mondays. The Pinacoteca di Brera holds Mantegna's foreshortened Dead Christ. The Museo Nazionale Scienza e Tecnologia has Leonardo machine models and a real submarine, the Enrico Toti, that you can board.
Milan after dark
Aperitivo starts around half six and the drink price carries a buffet, which in Navigli is effectively the meal. Brera is polished and expensive, Porta Venezia and Isola younger and queerer, Corso Como the club stretch. The city empties in August when whole streets of restaurants shutter for two or three weeks, so check before travelling then rather than after arriving.

The science museum's submarine tours have a minimum age and must be booked separately, but the Leonardo galleries and transport halls suit most ages. MUBA at the Rotonda della Besana is built for under-tens, and Parco Sempione backs onto the castle. Transport is the catch: the newer M4 and M5 lines are step-free, while many original M1 and M2 stations offer stairs only.
