When the weather turns in Milan

The Galleria's glass-vaulted arms connect the Duomo to La Scala without stepping outside, which is the single most useful wet-weather fact in Milan. The science museum is a full day. Fondazione Prada's Bar Luce, designed by Wes Anderson, is a destination in itself. Rinascente's top floor looks straight at the cathedral's flank. Milanese autumn rain is heavy and sustained rather than passing.

Milan's museums, and which one to pick

Leonardo's Last Supper is seen in fifteen-minute slots of about thirty people at Santa Maria delle Grazie, with tickets released in dated batches that vanish within minutes and no walk-ups; it closes Mondays. The Pinacoteca di Brera holds Mantegna's foreshortened Dead Christ. The Museo Nazionale Scienza e Tecnologia has Leonardo machine models and a real submarine, the Enrico Toti, that you can board.

What to eat in Milan

Milanese cooking is butter and saffron rather than tomato: risotto alla milanese, a bone-in veal cotoletta fried in clarified butter, ossobuco with gremolata, and cassoeula in winter. Luini has sold fried panzerotti behind the Duomo since the 1940s. Aperitivo buffets in Navigli and Brera serve enough food to replace dinner. What's actually worth your time in Milan

The Duomo's terraces are the ticket that matters here: 19 euro by stairs or 22 by lift puts you walking among the spires and flying buttresses, against 12 for the cathedral floor alone. Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II is a free covered walk-through. The Sforza Castle courtyards cost nothing and hold Michelangelo's unfinished Rondanini Pieta. The Navigli canals are an evening, not a sight.

Milan after dark

Aperitivo starts around half six and the drink price carries a buffet, which in Navigli is effectively the meal. Brera is polished and expensive, Porta Venezia and Isola younger and queerer, Corso Como the club stretch. The city empties in August when whole streets of restaurants shutter for two or three weeks, so check before travelling then rather than after arriving.
