The southwest monsoon from May to October delivers squalls rather than constant rain, and afternoons often clear entirely. Central Floresta in Phuket Town holds the Aquaria aquarium in its basement, and Jungceylon in Patong is the older mall. A Thai cooking class, a two-hour massage, or an hour walking the old town's covered five-foot ways all work. Muay Thai at Bangla Stadium runs regardless of weather.

What things cost in Phuket

Island prices sit well above the mainland: a street plate is 60 to 100 baht, but a Patong beachfront restaurant charges 300 to 600 for the same idea. Scooter hire runs 200 to 300 baht a day. A taxi from the airport to Patong is 800 to 1,000, which is why the airport bus at a fraction of that exists. Sun loungers cost 100 to 200 for the day.

Phuket's museums, and which one to pick

Museums are thin here and the worthwhile ones sit in the old town. Thai Hua Museum occupies a former Chinese-language school on Krabi Road and explains why Phuket reads as Hokkien rather than Thai in its buildings and its festivals.
