When the weather turns in Phuket

The southwest monsoon from May to October delivers squalls rather than constant rain, and afternoons often clear entirely. Central Floresta in Phuket Town holds the Aquaria aquarium in its basement, and Jungceylon in Patong is the older mall. A Thai cooking class, a two-hour massage, or an hour walking the old town's covered five-foot ways all work. Muay Thai at Bangla Stadium runs regardless of weather.

Phuket's museums, and which one to pick

Museums are thin here and the worthwhile ones sit in the old town. Thai Hua Museum occupies a former Chinese-language school on Krabi Road and explains why Phuket reads as Hokkien rather than Thai in its buildings and its festivals. Baan Chinpracha is a private 1903 mansion still lived in, open mornings only. Thalang National Museum, near the Heroines Monument, covers Andaman archaeology and the 1785 Burmese siege.

What to eat in Phuket

The cooking is Hokkien Chinese underneath: moo hong, pork belly braised with black pepper and garlic, and Phuket-style hokkien mee using thick yellow noodles, both reliably found at Lock Tien in the old town. Rawai's seafood market lets you buy by weight and pay a neighbouring restaurant to cook it. Every October the vegetarian festival turns the island meat-free for nine days, with piercing processions through town.

What's actually worth your time in Phuket

Phuket Old Town is the underrated half of the island: Sino-Portuguese shophouses along Thalang Road and Soi Romanee, repainted and largely intact, with a Sunday walking street through them. The Big Buddha above Chalong is free and worth the winding drive for the view more than the statue. Bangla Road in Patong is a spectacle, not a beach. Phi Phi day trips are four hours of boat for a crowded lagoon.

Phuket after dark

Bangla Road in Patong is roughly 400 metres of open-fronted bars, go-go clubs and touts, closing between one and two. Anyone selling a ping-pong show is running a bar-bill scam and it is simply declined. Kata and Karon keep the low-key beer bars and live-music rooms, and Rawai the seafood and sunsets. Beach clubs at Bang Tao such as Catch and Cafe del Mar work sunset rather than midnight.

When to go to Phuket

The month to avoid is May — around 31°C (88°F) with roughly 26 rain days. Prices and crowds track the weather here: January is the sweet spot, May the month most people skip.
