When the weather turns in Nairobi

Long rains fall March to May and short rains from October, and one afternoon downpour turns Mombasa Road and Waiyaki Way into a standstill that outlasts the weather itself. Plan indoors and then stay put: the National Museum with its adjoining snake park fills half a day, the Kenya National Archives on Moi Avenue is an overlooked hour, and Sarit Centre and Two Rivers have cinemas.

Nairobi's museums, and which one to pick

Museum Hill's Nairobi National Museum is built around the Leakey family's hominid finds and Joy Adamson's Peoples of Kenya portrait series, with a cast of Ahmed the elephant in the courtyard. Nairobi Gallery, in the old Provincial Commissioner's office at the Uhuru Highway roundabout, holds the Murumbi collection of African ornament. The Railway Museum keeps Lunatic Line locomotives and the carriage tied to the Tsavo man-eater story.

What to eat in Nairobi

Nyama choma is the civic dish: goat weighed raw, roasted over charcoal, then chopped onto a board with kachumbari and ugali. Kenyatta Market's butchery stalls do it honestly; Carnivore in Langata is the tourist version. Mama Oliech in Kilimani built its name on whole fried tilapia. Eastleigh's Somali canteens serve camel and bariis, and mutura, grilled blood sausage, appears on kerbsides after dark.

What first-timers get wrong in Nairobi

Kenya replaced tourist visas with an online eTA that must be approved before you board, so apply days ahead rather than counting on the airport. Install M-Pesa or carry a card, because park gates and plenty of restaurants no longer handle cash. Budget ninety minutes to cross town at rush hour. Matatus are cheap and legible only to locals, so use Bolt or Little instead.

What things cost in Nairobi

A plate of nyama choma with ugali runs roughly KES 700 to 1,200, depending on the weight of meat you point at. A matatu hop costs KES 50 to 100, while a Bolt across town is usually KES 500 to 1,000. Nairobi National Park bills non-residents in dollars, well above the citizen rate. A Tusker in a Westlands bar sits around KES 350.

The month to avoid is April — around 25°C (77°F) with roughly 27 rain days. Prices and crowds track the weather here: July is the sweet spot, April the month most people skip.
