What's actually worth your time in Nairobi

Nairobi National Park puts black rhino and lion against an office-tower skyline twelve kilometres from the CBD, and an early gate entry is the one splurge that repays itself. The Sheldrick elephant orphanage opens for a single hour around eleven and must be booked ahead. Giraffe Centre in Langata is genuinely hands-on. The KICC rooftop deck is a cheap photo stop, and Bomas of Kenya feels staged.

Nairobi after dark

Westlands carries most of it. Ojijo Road and Woodvale Grove stack bars floor on floor, and the Alchemist's open yard on Parklands Road runs Sunday afternoon sessions rather than only late nights. Gengetone and Afrobeats dominate the rooms, which stay open past three at weekends. Kilimani is the calmer alternative. Book a Bolt or Little home, because walking between venues after dark simply is not done.
