Charleston hotels: how to choose
A Charleston hotel choice is mostly about how close you want to be to Rainbow Row and The Battery, and how much you want to pay for it. The city has a dense cluster of boutique and luxury historic hotels downtown, plus more affordable chain options further up King Street and across the bridge in Mount Pleasant. Here’s how to read the market before you book.
What hotels are like, by area
South of Broad / Rainbow Row
Boutique and luxury hotels in restored historic buildings, walking distance to The Battery.
Nightly feel: High; this is Charleston’s most expensive lodging pocket.
French Quarter / City Market
Historic inns and mid-to-upscale hotels a short walk from the market and galleries.
Nightly feel: High, with some mid-range boutique options.
Upper King Street
A newer cluster of stylish hotels near the restaurant and nightlife strip.
Nightly feel: Mid-to-high; slightly better value than deep South of Broad.
Mount Pleasant / near the airport
Familiar chain hotels with parking, a short drive or rideshare from downtown.
Nightly feel: Budget-to-mid; the best value base if you have a car.
What surprises first-time hotel bookers
- Peak season is spring (March–May, azaleas and mild weather) — rooms sell out and rise sharply around the Cooper River Bridge Run and graduation weekends.
- Many downtown hotels occupy historic buildings, so rooms can be small and parking is rarely on-site — factor in a nightly valet or garage fee.
- Summer (June–August) is hot and humid, and hurricane season (June–November) can bring last-minute weather disruptions — check cancellation terms.
- "Walking distance to Rainbow Row" varies a lot — the Historic District is compact, but confirm the actual blocks, especially after dark.
- Some historic-building hotels lack elevators or have uneven, creaky floors — worth checking if mobility is a concern.
- King Street venues can be loud on weekend nights; ask for a room away from the street if you’re noise-sensitive.
When to book
For the March–May peak, book 2–3 months ahead, and earlier still around the Cooper River Bridge Run (early April) and Spoleto Festival USA (late May–early June). Fall (September–November) is a close second for weather and slightly easier to book. Summer and January–February are the cheapest and least crowded, if you can handle the heat or the occasional cold snap.
