What's actually worth your time in Jaipur

Amber Fort earns its INR 500 foreigner ticket: the Sheesh Mahal mirror hall and the stepped Jaleb Chowk approach are the real thing. Hawa Mahal at INR 600 is largely a facade, better photographed from the Wind View Cafe opposite than entered. Jantar Mantar's masonry instruments still tell time to two seconds. City Palace is privately owned and steeply priced at INR 1,200.

Jaipur after dark

Jaipur closes early by Indian city standards. Most of the walled city shutters around ten, and alcohol is restrained rather than absent. A night out here means a rooftop in the old city facing floodlit Nahargarh, or a hotel bar along MI Road and Civil Lines. Chokhi Dhani, twenty kilometres south on Tonk Road, sells a staged village-fair evening with folk dance and thali.

What things cost in Jaipur

A thali at a mid-range restaurant sits around INR 250 to 400, and a Rawat kachori costs roughly INR 40. Autorickshaws open near INR 30 and a cross-city hop is INR 100 to 150. The composite monument ticket is INR 1,000 for foreigners against INR 300 for Indians. Bani Park guesthouse rooms run INR 1,500 to 3,000 in season.

Jaipur's museums, and which one to pick

Albert Hall Museum in Ram Niwas Garden, an Indo-Saracenic pile opened in 1887, holds an Egyptian mummy alongside Rajasthani miniatures and armour, and floodlights itself nightly. The government composite ticket, INR 1,000 for foreigners and valid two days, covers it plus Amber, Nahargarh, Hawa Mahal, Jantar Mantar and Isarlat. City Palace's Chandra Mahal and textile galleries sit outside that scheme entirely.

What to eat in Jaipur

Rajasthani cooking here is heavy and ghee-forward: dal baati churma, gatte ki sabzi, and laal maas, a mutton curry reddened with Mathania chillies. Rawat Mishthan Bhandar near Sindhi Camp does the pyaaz kachori everybody queues for; LMB on Johari Bazaar remains the old vegetarian thali institution. Masala Chowk gathers city street vendors into one ticketed courtyard in Ram Niwas Garden.

The month to avoid is July — around 34°C (93°F) with roughly 21 rain days. Prices and crowds track the weather here: February is the sweet spot, July the month most people skip.
