What first-timers get wrong in San Diego
May Gray and June Gloom are real: the marine layer sits over the coast all morning through late spring and burns off around noon, and visitors book June beach weeks expecting sun. Balboa Park parking is free but full by ten on weekends. Alcohol is banned on city beaches. The Blue Line trolley runs to the border crossing at San Ysidro.
What things cost in San Diego
MTS charges $2.50 a ride and caps at a $6 day pass, paid by PRONTO card, app or contactless, with under-eighteens free. Cabrillo is twenty dollars a vehicle for a week. The zoo is around seventy-two dollars for adults and is the day's big spend. Timken admission is free. A fish taco runs four to six dollars.
San Diego with kids, realistically
At the zoo, the included bus tour and Skyfari gondola do the hill-climbing for you, which matters with tired children. Balboa Park has a free playground and a 1910 carousel, Belmont Park's Giant Dipper has run since 1925, and Legoland is up in Carlsbad. Children eighteen and under ride MTS free, which quietly removes the biggest family transport cost.
What to eat in San Diego
Two dishes were invented or perfected here. The Baja-style fish taco, battered and fried with cabbage and crema, came north from Ensenada and is best at the walk-up counters like Oscar's. The California burrito, carne asada with french fries inside, exists nowhere in Mexico and is entirely a San Diego creation. Convoy Street is the Asian dining corridor; Little Italy runs a large Saturday mercato.
San Diego after dark
San Diego County has over 150 breweries and effectively defined the West Coast IPA, but the best of them sit in Miramar business parks and close by nine because they are zoned industrial. The Gaslamp Quarter is the late club district, Garnet Avenue in Pacific Beach is the college one, and North Park is where locals actually drink. Last call is two.
