What first-timers get wrong in San Diego
May Gray and June Gloom are real: the marine layer sits over the coast all morning through late spring and burns off around noon, and visitors book June beach weeks expecting sun. Balboa Park parking is free but full by ten on weekends. Alcohol is banned on city beaches. The Blue Line trolley runs to the border crossing at San Ysidro.
What's actually worth your time in San Diego
Balboa Park is 1,200 acres of Spanish Revival buildings from the 1915 exposition, seventeen museums and free gardens, and you can spend a day without paying anything. Cabrillo National Monument on Point Loma costs twenty dollars a vehicle for seven days and is worth timing to low tide for the tidepools. La Jolla Cove's sea lions are free, loud and pungent.

Free entirely, the Timken in Balboa Park holds European old masters and a room of Russian icons, which makes it the sharpest hour in the city; the San Diego Museum of Art beside it charges. At the zoo, the included bus tour and Skyfari gondola do the hill-climbing for you, which matters with tired children.
