What's actually worth your time in San Diego
Balboa Park is 1,200 acres of Spanish Revival buildings from the 1915 exposition, seventeen museums and free gardens, and you can spend a day without paying anything. Cabrillo National Monument on Point Loma costs twenty dollars a vehicle for seven days and is worth timing to low tide for the tidepools. La Jolla Cove's sea lions are free, loud and pungent.
What to eat in San Diego
Two dishes were invented or perfected here. The Baja-style fish taco, battered and fried with cabbage and crema, came north from Ensenada and is best at the walk-up counters like Oscar's. The California burrito, carne asada with french fries inside, exists nowhere in Mexico and is entirely a San Diego creation.
