San Diego County has over 150 breweries and effectively defined the West Coast IPA, but the best of them sit in Miramar business parks and close by nine because they are zoned industrial. What to eat in San Diego
Two dishes were invented or perfected here. The Baja-style fish taco, battered and fried with cabbage and crema, came north from Ensenada and is best at the walk-up counters like Oscar's. The California burrito, carne asada with french fries inside, exists nowhere in Mexico and is entirely a San Diego creation. What's actually worth your time in San Diego
Balboa Park is 1,200 acres of Spanish Revival buildings from the 1915 exposition, seventeen museums and free gardens, and you can spend a day without paying anything. Cabrillo National Monument on Point Loma costs twenty dollars a vehicle for seven days and is worth timing to low tide for the tidepools. La Jolla Cove's sea lions are free, loud and pungent.
San Diego with kids, realistically
At the zoo, the included bus tour and Skyfari gondola do the hill-climbing for you, which matters with tired children. Balboa Park has a free playground and a 1910 carousel, Belmont Park's Giant Dipper has run since 1925, and Legoland is up in Carlsbad. Children eighteen and under ride MTS free, which quietly removes the biggest family transport cost.
When the weather turns in San Diego
San Diego gets around ten inches a year, almost all between December and March, so a wet day is genuinely unusual. Balboa Park's museum cluster is the obvious plan, the Midway's hangar deck stays dry, the Fleet Science Center runs dome films, and Liberty Station's Public Market in the old naval training centre is entirely under cover.
