Hokkaido is not Honshu, and the national Japan Rail Pass covers very little of use here beyond the Rapid Airport train into the city. Susukino ranks among Japan's three great entertainment districts and is unusually compact, thousands of bars stacked vertically around the Nikka neon and running to five. The subway stops near midnight, so late nights mean a taxi. Tanukikoji's covered arcade is the sober alternative. Winter drinking is indoors by necessity, since January nights sit comfortably below freezing for weeks at a time.
