What first-timers get wrong in Sapporo

Hokkaido is not Honshu, and the national Japan Rail Pass covers very little of use here beyond the Rapid Airport train into the city. Winter footwear needs real grip, because pavements glaze rather than merely slush. Susukino's touts outside multi-floor buildings steer people to overpriced clubs; the ramen alley needs no escort. Snow Festival week books out months ahead at doubled rates.

Sapporo after dark

Susukino ranks among Japan's three great entertainment districts and is unusually compact, thousands of bars stacked vertically around the Nikka neon and running to five. The subway stops near midnight, so late nights mean a taxi. Tanukikoji's covered arcade is the sober alternative. Winter drinking is indoors by necessity, since January nights sit comfortably below freezing for weeks at a time.

What things cost in Sapporo

Miso ramen runs ¥900 to 1,200 a bowl and soup curry ¥1,200 to 1,600. Subway singles are ¥210 to 380, while the weekend Donichika day card is ¥520 against ¥830 on weekdays. What to eat in Sapporo

Sapporo invented miso ramen, and Ganso Ramen Yokocho in Susukino has been the alley for it since 1951. Snow is the attraction for children here, and Sapporo Teine and Bankei both have beginner slopes inside the city limits. Maruyama Zoo costs ¥800 and its polar bear underwater tunnel holds attention. Moerenuma Park, an Isamu Noguchi land sculpture, is free and includes a glass pyramid and a climbable play mountain. Strollers founder on packed snow from December to March, where a sled works.

When to go to Sapporo

The month to avoid is February — around -2°C (28°F) with roughly 16 rain days. Prices and crowds track the weather here: July is the sweet spot, February the month most people skip.
