Orlando after dark

Most visitors never leave Disney Springs or Universal CityWalk, which are outdoor malls with bars and a firm family-friendly ceiling. Real Orlando nightlife lives downtown around Wall Street Plaza and Church Street, plus the Milk District and Mills 50 for dive bars and karaoke. Florida's last call is 2am, though downtown Orlando venues can run later. Rideshare surges viciously at park closing time.

What things cost in Orlando

Lynx buses cost $2 a ride and $4.50 for an all-day pass, while the I-Ride Trolley along International Drive sells multi-day passes from around $16. Single-day park tickets stretch from roughly $139 at Epic Universe to near $200 at Disney on peak dates. A counter-service meal inside a park runs $16 to $22, against about $12 for the same food on I-Drive.

What to eat in Orlando

Escape the resort restaurants once a day and drive to Mills 50, Orlando's Vietnamese district, where Little Saigon has served pho since the eighties. East End Market in Audubon Park is a small food hall with local bakers and a serious cheese counter. Winter Park's Park Avenue handles brunch. Florida-Cuban sandwiches here are pressed with salami, a Tampa inheritance you will not find in Miami.

What's actually worth your time in Orlando

Orlando is a ticket town, and the honest advice is to buy fewer parks and stay longer inside each one. Epic Universe, Universal's newest gate, starts near $139 a day and rewards an open-to-close visit. Kennedy Space Center is an hour east and worth the drive for the actual Atlantis orbiter hanging above you. Gatorland is cheap and unpretentious. ICON Park on I-Drive is a filler evening, not a destination.

Orlando's museums, and which one to pick

Winter Park's Morse Museum holds the largest Tiffany collection anywhere, including the reassembled chapel interior from the 1893 Chicago World's Fair, and it closes Mondays. Orlando Science Center fills half a day around its four-storey atrium. The Mennello Museum concentrates on American folk art, especially Earl Cunningham. None of these is why anyone books a flight here, which is precisely why they stay quiet.
