Treat the Gateway of India as a five-minute photograph, not an attraction; its actual value is the ferry jetty behind it. Elephanta Caves, an hour out by boat and closed Mondays, is the real excursion, with sixth-century rock-cut Shiva sculpture. Marine Drive at dusk and the Banganga Tank at Walkeshwar cost nothing. Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus is best appreciated from the pavement opposite.
What to eat in Mumbai
Vada pav is the whole city argued into a bun, and Ashok Vada Pav in Dadar is the usual pilgrimage. Mohammed Ali Road becomes a meat-and-sweets corridor from roughly 7.30pm to 1am, extending towards four through Ramadan.
