What first-timers get wrong in Mumbai
Boarding a local train is not a matter of politeness. You push, and you position yourself by the door two stops early or you will not get off. Buy a tourist ticket rather than queueing daily. Autorickshaws are barred south of Mahim, so Colaba and Fort mean taxis. Elephanta ferries stop entirely through the monsoon, roughly June to September.
What to eat in Mumbai
Vada pav is the whole city argued into a bun, and Ashok Vada Pav in Dadar is the usual pilgrimage. Mohammed Ali Road becomes a meat-and-sweets corridor from roughly 7.30pm to 1am, extending towards four through Ramadan. Add Parsi berry pulao at Britannia in Ballard Estate, bhelpuri on Chowpatty sand, and Bohri kebabs in the lanes off Bhendi Bazaar.
Mumbai's museums, and which one to pick
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya, which taxi drivers still call the Prince of Wales Museum, holds Indus seals, Gandharan sculpture and a serious miniatures wing under a Gothic-Saracenic dome. Dr Bhau Daji Lad in Byculla, closed Wednesdays and open 10.30 to 4.30, is the restored Victorian city museum, small and beautifully done. Jehangir Art Gallery at Kala Ghoda rotates free contemporary shows.
Mumbai after dark
Mumbai actually stays up. Bandra West's Waterfield and Hill roads and Lower Parel's converted mill compounds carry most of it, with bars running to 1.30am and some Saturdays to three. Colaba's Leopold and Cafe Mondegar remain the tourist standards. Maharashtra sets the drinking age at twenty-five and technically requires a permit, though hotel bars enforce neither with much conviction.
