What's actually worth your time in Mumbai

Treat the Gateway of India as a five-minute photograph, not an attraction; its actual value is the ferry jetty behind it. Elephanta Caves, an hour out by boat and closed Mondays, is the real excursion, with sixth-century rock-cut Shiva sculpture. Marine Drive at dusk and the Banganga Tank at Walkeshwar cost nothing. Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus is best appreciated from the pavement opposite.

Mumbai after dark

Mumbai actually stays up. Bandra West's Waterfield and Hill roads and Lower Parel's converted mill compounds carry most of it, with bars running to 1.30am and some Saturdays to three. Colaba's Leopold and Cafe Mondegar remain the tourist standards. Maharashtra sets the drinking age at twenty-five and technically requires a permit, though hotel bars enforce neither with much conviction.

Mumbai's museums, and which one to pick

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya, which taxi drivers still call the Prince of Wales Museum, holds Indus seals, Gandharan sculpture and a serious miniatures wing under a Gothic-Saracenic dome. Dr Bhau Daji Lad in Byculla, closed Wednesdays and open 10.30 to 4.30, is the restored Victorian city museum, small and beautifully done. Jehangir Art Gallery at Kala Ghoda rotates free contemporary shows.

Mumbai with kids, realistically

Local trains at rush hour are no place for a small child, so travel midday or take the Metro's newer lines instead. Kidzania in Ghatkopar runs a whole play-city sized for primary ages, and the Nehru Science Centre in Worli is hands-on and cheap. Sanjay Gandhi National Park sits inside the city limits with Kanheri Caves and a toy train. Juhu beats Chowpatty for space.

When the weather turns in Mumbai

The June to September monsoon is not a shower but weeks of it, and Sion, Kurla and the Milan Subway flood on schedule. Plan indoors: CSMVS, the Asiatic Society's reading rooms, or the climate-controlled penguin house at Byculla Zoo next to the city museum. High Street Phoenix in Lower Parel takes an afternoon. Confirm the Western and Central lines are running first.

When to go to Mumbai

The month to avoid is June — around 30°C (86°F) with roughly 27 rain days. Prices and crowds track the weather here: January is the sweet spot, June the month most people skip.
