What first-timers get wrong in Maldives
Time your international arrival at Velana before roughly 14:00: seaplanes fly visual daylight rules only, and landing later means an unplanned night in Hulhumale at your own expense. Resort transfers are billed separately from the room rate and quoted in US dollars. Away from designated bikini beaches on local islands, cover shoulders and knees. Drones are confiscated at customs without a permit.
What's actually worth your time in Maldives
The Maldives has few conventional monuments; what you pay for is a specific lagoon. Hukuru Miskiy, the coral-stone Friday Mosque carved in 1658, is the one genuine building, and Male's north-waterfront fish market rewards an hour. Hanifaru Bay in Baa Atoll is worth the boat during manta season. The artificial beach in Male is a photo stop and nothing more.
What to eat in Maldives
Short eats, called hedhikaa, are the real cuisine here: gulha, bajiya and masroshi, eaten mid-afternoon in Male tea houses and the hotaa near the market.
