When the weather turns in Maldives
Southwest monsoon squalls between May and November blow through in an hour rather than settling in. Resorts fall back on spas, indoor pools and the dive-centre classroom. In Male, the National Art Gallery, the Islamic Centre and the covered market on Boduthakurufaanu Magu keep you dry, while Hulhumale has a mall cinema. Rough weather cancels boat transfers, so build in a buffer day.
Maldives's museums, and which one to pick
The National Museum in Male's Sultan Park holds the thrones, palanquins and lacquerwork of the Dhivehi sultanate, alongside surviving pre-Islamic Buddhist coral carvings, many of which were smashed by vandals in 2012 with the gaps still visible. It closes Fridays. Beyond it the country has essentially no gallery scene, and resorts substitute marine-biology centres and coral-restoration talks instead.
What to eat in Maldives
Short eats, called hedhikaa, are the real cuisine here: gulha, bajiya and masroshi, eaten mid-afternoon in Male tea houses and the hotaa near the market. Mas huni, tuna shredded with coconut and onion, arrives with roshi at breakfast everywhere. Garudhiya, a clear tuna broth poured over rice with lime and chilli, is home cooking that resorts almost never put on a menu.
What first-timers get wrong in Maldives
Time your international arrival at Velana before roughly 14:00: seaplanes fly visual daylight rules only, and landing later means an unplanned night in Hulhumale at your own expense. Resort transfers are billed separately from the room rate and quoted in US dollars. Away from designated bikini beaches on local islands, cover shoulders and knees. Drones are confiscated at customs without a permit.
What things cost in Maldives
Green tax runs USD 12 per person per night at resorts and USD 6 at guesthouses with 50 rooms or fewer, layered on top of 16 percent T-GST and a 10 percent service charge. Shared seaplane transfers cost roughly USD 450 to 800 return. The public ferry from Male to Maafushi is about USD 2 to 3. Hedhikaa in Male cost a few rufiyaa each.
