Cairns nights are backpacker nights: the Lagoon end of the Esplanade first, then Grafton and Lake Streets, with the Gilligan's complex operating as hostel, bar and nightclub in one building. What to eat in Cairns
This is barramundi, mud crab and coral trout country, and Rusty's Markets on Grafton Street — Friday to Sunday only — is where the mangosteens, rambutans and soursop actually are. The Esplanade Night Markets open daily as a cheap Asian food court. Ochre Restaurant serves croc, emu and native pepperberry without irony. Coffee from Kuranda and cheese from the Atherton Tablelands come down the hill.
What's actually worth your time in Cairns
Cairns has no swimming beach — the foreshore is tidal mudflat — so the free saltwater Esplanade Lagoon does that job instead. The Great Barrier Reef is the whole point, and outer-reef boats out of the Marlin Marina beat closer Green Island for coral. Skyrail's cableway and the 1891 Kuranda Scenic Railway make a loop best done in opposite directions. The Daintree and Cape Tribulation are a long day north.
Cairns with kids, realistically
The free, lifeguarded Esplanade Lagoon solves the beach problem for small children entirely, and Muddy's water playground sits right beside it. Skyrail's gondolas suit any age, while the Kuranda railway is two slow hours and needs older children. Reef day trips generally take five and up, and swell on the outer reef makes seasickness a genuine risk for the whole family.
When the weather turns in Cairns
The wet season runs roughly November to April and produces monsoon days that never lift, which is a different animal from a shower. Cairns Aquarium on Florence Street is built around local river-to-reef habitats and fills three hours. The Art Gallery and the Museum are indoors and close together. Reef trips still sail in rain and the water underneath is unaffected — only the boat ride is miserable.
