Reef trips still sail in rain and the water underneath is unaffected — only the boat ride is miserable.

Marine stingers make the sea off Cairns and the northern beaches unswimmable without a full lycra suit from about November to May; box jellyfish and Irukandji are why nets and vinegar bottles sit on every beach. Every reef trip adds a Great Barrier Reef Environmental Management Charge per person on top of the advertised fare. Crocodiles live in the Barron and Daintree rivers, so take the no-swimming signs literally.
Cairns's museums, and which one to pick
Cairns is thin on museums and fairly honest about it. The Cairns Museum, in the 1907 School of Arts building on Shields Street, covers the goldfields, the Chinese market gardeners and the wartime base, and it is small. Cairns Art Gallery occupies the former Public Curator's building and shows Far North Queensland and Torres Strait artists. Tanks Arts Centre uses three wartime naval fuel bunkers cut into Edge Hill.
