Marine stingers make the sea off Cairns and the northern beaches unswimmable without a full lycra suit from about November to May; box jellyfish and Irukandji are why nets and vinegar bottles sit on every beach. Reef day trips generally take five and up, and swell on the outer reef makes seasickness a genuine risk for the whole family.
When the weather turns in Cairns
The wet season runs roughly November to April and produces monsoon days that never lift, which is a different animal from a shower. Cairns Aquarium on Florence Street is built around local river-to-reef habitats and fills three hours. The Art Gallery and the Museum are indoors and close together. Reef trips still sail in rain and the water underneath is unaffected — only the boat ride is miserable.
