Nice after dark
Vieux Nice's bars are packed and legally quiet early, since noise rules push the lanes around Rue Bosio and Place Rossetti to wind down not long after midnight. The port district and Rue Bonaparte hold the later, more local crowd, and the Promenade beach clubs run summer sets. Trams stop before the bars do, so plan the walk home.
What to eat in Nice
Socca, a thin chickpea-flour pancake baked on a copper pan and served scorching in paper, is the thing to chase, at Chez Theresa off Rue Droite or Chez Pipo near the port. Add pissaladiere, pan bagnat and petits farcis. A purist salade nicoise contains no potatoes and no green beans. Fenocchio on Place Rossetti runs to around ninety ice cream flavours.
What's actually worth your time in Nice
The Promenade des Anglais runs seven kilometres and the beach below it is pebbles rather than sand, so bring shoes and a mat. Colline du Chateau has had no castle since Louis XIV blew it up in 1706, but the free lift from Rue des Ponchettes spares you the climb to the best view in the city. Cours Saleya's flower market packs up by early afternoon.
Nice with kids, realistically
Pebbles are hard on small feet but the water is calm and unusually clear, and Parc Phoenix near the airport combines a greenhouse, a lake and a small zoo cheaply. The Promenade's separated cycle and skate lane runs for kilometres uninterrupted. Tram line 2 runs underground beneath the centre and takes prams; the Cimiez hill buses are much tighter.
When the weather turns in Nice
Go up to Cimiez, where the Matisse museum, the Franciscan monastery and its gardens cluster within a few minutes of each other. In town, the Musee des Beaux-Arts Jules Cheret and Villa Massena are indoors and rarely busy, and Nice Etoile on Avenue Jean Medecin gives covered shopping. The old town's tight lanes shelter you far better than the exposed Promenade.
