What's actually worth your time in Nice
The Promenade des Anglais runs seven kilometres and the beach below it is pebbles rather than sand, so bring shoes and a mat. Colline du Chateau has had no castle since Louis XIV blew it up in 1706, but the free lift from Rue des Ponchettes spares you the climb to the best view in the city. Cours Saleya's flower market packs up by early afternoon.
Nice after dark
Vieux Nice's bars are packed and legally quiet early, since noise rules push the lanes around Rue Bosio and Place Rossetti to wind down not long after midnight. The port district and Rue Bonaparte hold the later, more local crowd, and the Promenade beach clubs run summer sets. Trams stop before the bars do, so plan the walk home.
What things cost in Nice
Transport is cheap here: 7 euros buys a day pass, 13 covers two days and 20 a full week. Musee Matisse is 10 euros and the four-day municipal museum pass 15. Socca costs a few euros a portion, a plat du jour in Vieux Nice 15 to 22, and a private beach sunbed on the Promenade starts around 20 for the day.
Nice's museums, and which one to pick
Musee Matisse sits up in Cimiez among the Roman ruins of Cemenelum, costs 10 euros and closes Tuesdays; Matisse is buried in the cemetery beside it. The Musee Marc Chagall is a national museum with its own ticket, built around seventeen Biblical Message canvases. MAMAC covers Yves Klein and Niki de Saint Phalle. A 15-euro pass valid four days covers most municipal museums.
What to eat in Nice
Socca, a thin chickpea-flour pancake baked on a copper pan and served scorching in paper, is the thing to chase, at Chez Theresa off Rue Droite or Chez Pipo near the port. Add pissaladiere, pan bagnat and petits farcis. A purist salade nicoise contains no potatoes and no green beans. Fenocchio on Place Rossetti runs to around ninety ice cream flavours.
