George Town's UNESCO core is walkable and mostly free, and Khoo Kongsi's carved clan house is the finest of the kongsi for a small fee. What to eat in Penang

Chulia Street is the backpacker spine, its bars trading past midnight while the hawker carts outside keep frying. Love Lane draws the same crowd into a tighter alley, and Upper Penang Road holds the older club strip. Gurney Drive is eating rather than drinking and its hawker centre thins by eleven. Sunday nights go noticeably quiet right across the island.

George Town is compact enough to walk with children, but pavements are broken and often simply absent, so a carrier beats a stroller in the heritage core.
