When the weather turns in Penang
Penang's downpours arrive fast during the September to November inter-monsoon and usually clear within the hour. Duck into the Peranakan Mansion, the Camera Museum on Muntri Street, or Hin Bus Depot's art space and cafes. Straits Quay and Gurney Plaza are the malls. Hawker centres are roofed but open-sided, so a hard shower still reaches your table sideways.
Penang's museums, and which one to pick
Pinang Peranakan Mansion on Church Street costs about RM20 and gives the strongest single interior in town, a Straits Chinese townhouse of green shutters and Glasgow ironwork still crammed with its own furniture. Penang State Museum reopened after a long renovation. Ernest Zacharevic's 2012 wall paintings are not a museum but function as one, mapped across Armenian and Cannon streets.
What to eat in Penang
Penang argues about food more than anything else. Assam laksa at the Air Itam market stall below Kek Lok Si runs RM5 to 9, cash only. Char kway teow is fought over between Lorong Selamat and Siam Road. Then there is Hokkien mee, nasi kandar at Line Clear on Penang Road, cendol on Lebuh Keng Kwee, and rojak wherever the queue happens to be.
What's actually worth your time in Penang
George Town's UNESCO core is walkable and mostly free, and Khoo Kongsi's carved clan house is the finest of the kongsi for a small fee. The Blue Mansion runs guided tours twice daily at eleven and half past three for RM25, and the tour is the entire point. Penang Hill's funicular is RM30 return for foreigners. Kek Lok Si's pagoda is a real climb.
Penang after dark
Chulia Street is the backpacker spine, its bars trading past midnight while the hawker carts outside keep frying. Love Lane draws the same crowd into a tighter alley, and Upper Penang Road holds the older club strip. Gurney Drive is eating rather than drinking and its hawker centre thins by eleven. Sunday nights go noticeably quiet right across the island.
