What first-timers get wrong in Penang
The airport sits at the island's southern end and a Grab into George Town takes thirty to forty minutes; the Butterworth ferry now carries passengers only. Hawker stalls are cash-only and each bills you separately, so carry small notes. Many famous stalls take a fixed weekly day off, Siam Road's char kway teow included, so check before crossing town for one plate.
What's actually worth your time in Penang
George Town's UNESCO core is walkable and mostly free, and Khoo Kongsi's carved clan house is the finest of the kongsi for a small fee. The Blue Mansion runs guided tours twice daily at eleven and half past three for RM25, and the tour is the entire point. Penang Hill's funicular is RM30 return for foreigners. Escape Penang at Teluk Bahang is a ropes-and-water park for over-sixes, and Entopia's butterfly enclosure sits nearby. The funicular up Penang Hill is an easy win. Rapid Penang buses take exact change only, no notes broken.
When the weather turns in Penang
Penang's downpours arrive fast during the September to November inter-monsoon and usually clear within the hour. Duck into the Peranakan Mansion, the Camera Museum on Muntri Street, or Hin Bus Depot's art space and cafes. Straits Quay and Gurney Plaza are the malls. Hawker centres are roofed but open-sided, so a hard shower still reaches your table sideways.
