What first-timers get wrong in Mykonos
The Old Port and the New Port at Tourlos are two kilometres apart and different ferries and Delos boats use different ones, so confirm which before setting out. Taxis are few and cash-oriented; the KTEL bus network is cheap and genuinely useful. Sunbed prices are seldom posted, so ask the figure before sitting down. Delos closes entirely for the winter.
What's actually worth your time in Mykonos
Chora's lanes were deliberately laid out as a disorienting maze to slow down raiding pirates, so getting lost is the design working rather than your failure. The Kato Mili windmills and the waterfront houses of Little Venice carry the sunset crowd. Delos, thirty to forty minutes by boat and open only 1 April to 30 November, is the substantial excursion. Mykonos's museums, and which one to pick
The Archaeological Museum of Mykonos holds the Mykonos Vase, a seventh-century BC relief pithos carrying one of the earliest known depictions of the Trojan Horse. On Delos, the site museum keeps the original Naxian lions; the row on the terrace outdoors are replicas. The Aegean Maritime Museum and the Folklore Museum in Chora are each an hour, no more.
What to eat in Mykonos
Kopanisti is the island's own cheese, fermented until sharp and peppery, spread on barley rusks with louza, air-cured pork loin. Kremmydopita, onion pie, is the local savoury. Amygdalota almond sweets come from the old-town bakeries. For fish away from harbour pricing, head inland to Ano Mera, or to Kiki's Tavern at Agios Sostis, which has no electricity, no phone and no reservations.
