What's actually worth your time in Mykonos

Chora's lanes were deliberately laid out as a disorienting maze to slow down raiding pirates, so getting lost is the design working rather than your failure. The Archaeological Museum of Mykonos holds the Mykonos Vase, a seventh-century BC relief pithos carrying one of the earliest known depictions of the Trojan Horse. On Delos, the site museum keeps the original Naxian lions; the row on the terrace outdoors are replicas. The Aegean Maritime Museum and the Folklore Museum in Chora are each an hour, no more.

July and August are built around bottle service and volume, which is not a children's environment. Ornos and Platis Gialos are the shallow, sheltered, family-normal beaches with frequent boat shuttles along the south coast. Chora is step-free but the lanes are too narrow for a pram once the evening crowd arrives. Delos has no shade and no real cafe, so bring water and closed shoes.

When the weather turns in Mykonos

Rain belongs to winter here, when most of the island is closed anyway. The actual weather problem is the meltemi, a strong northerly wind that cancels Delos boats at short notice and makes exposed north-coast beaches like Ftelia unusable. The two small museums in Chora cover about two hours between them, which is honestly the extent of the indoor options.

The month to avoid is January — around 14°C (57°F) with roughly 10 rain days. Prices and crowds track the weather here: September is the sweet spot, January the month most people skip.
