What first-timers get wrong in Mykonos

The Old Port and the New Port at Tourlos are two kilometres apart and different ferries and Delos boats use different ones, so confirm which before setting out. Taxis are few and cash-oriented; the KTEL bus network is cheap and genuinely useful. Sunbed prices are seldom posted, so ask the figure before sitting down. Delos closes entirely for the winter.

What things cost in Mykonos

Visiting Delos independently costs about 45 euro all in, being 25 for the return boat and 20 at the site ticket office, or 10 reduced with a passport. Sunbeds start near 50 euro for a pair at lesser-known beaches and reach 250 to 400 for a front row at Nammos. An evening of bars in Little Venice lands roughly sixty to a hundred and twenty.

What to eat in Mykonos

Kopanisti is the island's own cheese, fermented until sharp and peppery, spread on barley rusks with louza, air-cured pork loin. Kremmydopita, onion pie, is the local savoury. Amygdalota almond sweets come from the old-town bakeries. For fish away from harbour pricing, head inland to Ano Mera, or to Kiki's Tavern at Agios Sostis, which has no electricity, no phone and no reservations.

Mykonos with kids, realistically

July and August are built around bottle service and volume, which is not a children's environment. Ornos and Platis Gialos are the shallow, sheltered, family-normal beaches with frequent boat shuttles along the south coast. Chora is step-free but the lanes are too narrow for a pram once the evening crowd arrives. Delos has no shade and no real cafe, so bring water and closed shoes.

When the weather turns in Mykonos

Rain belongs to winter here, when most of the island is closed anyway. The actual weather problem is the meltemi, a strong northerly wind that cancels Delos boats at short notice and makes exposed north-coast beaches like Ftelia unusable. The two small museums in Chora cover about two hours between them, which is honestly the extent of the indoor options.

When to go to Mykonos

The month to avoid is January — around 14°C (57°F) with roughly 10 rain days. Prices and crowds track the weather here: September is the sweet spot, January the month most people skip.
