What's actually worth your time in Kraków

Wawel is a hill of separately ticketed exhibitions: the State Rooms, the Crown Treasury and Armoury, the Cathedral and its bell tower are each priced apart, while the courtyard costs nothing. The Cloth Hall in the Rynek is a souvenir arcade at ground level with a genuine nineteenth-century gallery above it. St Mary's hourly trumpet call breaks off mid-note, deliberately, and takes a minute.

Kraków's museums, and which one to pick

The Rynek Underground museum sits several metres below the main square on the excavated medieval market level and closes on the second Monday of each month. Schindler's Factory in Podgorze is about wartime Krakow rather than the film, and sells out early in the day. The Czartoryski Museum holds Leonardo's Lady with an Ermine, the only painting by him in Poland.

Kraków after dark

Kazimierz, the old Jewish quarter, does the drinking, between Plac Nowy's ring of bars, Alchemia's candlelit rooms and Singer with its sewing-machine tables. The Rynek's cellar clubs are crowded and expensive. Krakow has an unusual density of vaulted underground bars simply because the medieval cellars survived. Stag groups concentrate on the square, and prices halve ten minutes south of it.

What to eat in Kraków

Obwarzanek, the braided ring bread sold from blue carts, carries EU protected origin status and is not a pretzel. Zapiekanka, an open baguette under mushrooms and cheese, is served late from the round Okraglak kiosks in Plac Nowy in Kazimierz. Look also for maczanka po krakowsku, slow pork in gravy inside a roll, and zurek served in a hollowed bread bowl.

Kraków with kids, realistically

The Dragon's Den staircase under Wawel ends at a fire-breathing bronze dragon and delights ages four to ten for the price of a few zloty. Planty, the green ring laid where the walls stood, circles the whole old town on flat paths. Rynek cobbles are hard on prams. The Wieliczka salt mine involves a few hundred stairs down and suits seven upward.

When to go to Kraków

The month to avoid is January — around 3°C (37°F) with roughly 11 rain days. Prices and crowds track the weather here: September is the sweet spot, January the month most people skip.
