Kraków after dark

Kazimierz, the old Jewish quarter, does the drinking, between Plac Nowy's ring of bars, Alchemia's candlelit rooms and Singer with its sewing-machine tables. The Rynek's horse carriages and square-side terraces both charge tourist rates, and the same meal two streets away is half the price. Transit is 4 zloty for twenty minutes or 25 zloty for 24 hours, valid across all zones. Auschwitz-Birkenau needs a booked entry slot and is ninety minutes away, so it is not a spontaneous afternoon.

When the weather turns in Kraków

The Rynek Underground is by definition indoors and cool. Schindler's Factory, the Czartoryski Museum and MOCAK in Podgorze are all covered, and Kazimierz's cellar bars were built for exactly this weather. The Wieliczka salt mine half an hour out holds a steady fourteen degrees whatever the surface is doing. Galeria Krakowska sits directly on top of the main station.

A twenty-minute tram ticket is 4 zloty, sixty minutes 6 zloty, and 24 hours 25 zloty. An obwarzanek is small change and a zapiekanka a handful of zloty. Milk-bar and Kazimierz lunch plates run 20 to 35 zloty while restaurant mains reach 45 to 65. Wawel's separate exhibition tickets add up quickly, so choose two rather than buying the lot.
