What to eat in Blue Ridge
Fannin County bills itself as the trout capital of Georgia, and the Toccoa is stocked, so smoked and pan-fried trout turn up on menus that would otherwise be pure Appalachian meat-and-three. Harvest on Main does the upmarket version. Mercier Orchards sells fried apple pies, cider slushies and hard cider pressed on site. Roadside boiled peanuts appear in autumn along Highway 5.
Blue Ridge after dark
Evenings here happen on rented cabin porches, around fire pits, with whatever was bought before the stores shut. Downtown Blue Ridge empties by nine. The genuine outing is the Swan Drive-In on Summit Street, a 1955 single-screen still running double features from spring through autumn with car-radio sound. A handful of taprooms pour local beer, and that is the full extent of it.
What's actually worth your time in Blue Ridge
The Blue Ridge Scenic Railway leaves the 1905 depot on East Main and follows the old Marietta and North Georgia grade beside the Toccoa to McCaysville and its twin, Copperhill, Tennessee, where a painted blue line down the sidewalk marks the state border. The Toccoa River Swinging Bridge on the Benton MacKaye Trail is a genuine walk. Mercier Orchards earns a stop; the antique blocks downtown are browsing.
Blue Ridge's museums, and which one to pick
Fannin County has almost no museums, and pretending otherwise wastes a day. What exists instead is Expedition Bigfoot, a sasquatch collection on Highway 515 in Cherry Log with plaster casts and eyewitness recordings, and the Blue Ridge Mountains Arts Association gallery on West Main, which runs juried regional shows and shares a building with the community theater. The depot keeps a modest railroad display.
