What things cost in Cinque Terre
The Trekking Card is €10 a day and €15 on peak dates. The Treno Card, adding unlimited Cinque Terre Express journeys, runs roughly €22 to €35 for a single day depending on season, with multi-day versions cheaper per day. Via dell'Amore is bundled into both now, on timed slots. A cone of fried anchovies costs a few euro; harbourfront seafood costs many times over.
What to eat in Cinque Terre
Monterosso's salted anchovies are a Slow Food presidium, served filleted with lemon or laid under oil. Pesto is Ligurian and belongs on trofie or trenette with potato and green beans stirred through. Buy fried seafood in a paper cone from a friggitoria and eat it sitting on the rocks. Sciacchetrà, the raisined dessert wine of these terraces, is scarce and priced accordingly.
Cinque Terre after dark
Effectively none, by geography as much as by design. Bars in Vernazza and Riomaggiore close around midnight at the height of summer and far earlier otherwise, and Monterosso is the only village with anything like a bar strip. Last Cinque Terre Express departures matter more than closing time here, because a missed train means a taxi costing more than dinner did.
What's actually worth your time in Cinque Terre
Five villages, and they are not interchangeable. Monterosso al Mare has the only proper sand beach; Vernazza has the natural harbour and Doria castle everyone photographs; Corniglia perches on a cliff with no water access and 382 steps up from its station; Manarola gives the classic sunset angle from the Nessun Dorma terrace; Riomaggiore stacks steeply down to a slipway.
Cinque Terre's museums, and which one to pick
Almost nothing here is a museum, and hunting for one wastes a day. The Castello Doria at Riomaggiore and Vernazza's watchtower are small fortifications sold on their views rather than any collection. Manarola's hillside nativity, lit from December, is folk installation. For real museums, La Spezia is twenty minutes down the line with the Museo Amedeo Lia and the naval museum.
