What to eat in Colombo

Gangaramaya Temple earns its small donation for the magpie hoard of Buddhas, vintage cars and gifted curiosities packed inside. Independence Memorial Hall and the Old Lighthouse on Chaithya Road are photo stops. Galle Face Green deserves its reputation at dusk, when the isso wade carts and kite sellers appear. The Lotus Tower charges foreigners many times the local rate for a view over a city that is flat and low-rise.
Colombo's museums, and which one to pick
The Colombo National Museum, in a white 1877 building on Sir Marcus Fernando Mawatha, holds the throne and crown of the last king of Kandy, surrendered to the British in 1815, plus a strong Sinhalese bronze collection. It shuts on public holidays and poya days. The Natural History Museum next door is dusty and skippable. Pettah's Dutch Period Museum occupies a 17th-century governor's townhouse.
