What things cost in Colombo

Rice and curry at a local canteen costs roughly LKR 500 to 800, and a plate of kottu lands in the same range. A metered tuk-tuk across the centre runs a few hundred rupees. The National Museum, like most state sites, charges foreigners a separate and far higher rate than the local ticket. A large Lion Lager in a bar typically costs LKR 700 to 1,200.

Colombo after dark

Colombo goes to bed early by Asian standards, with most bars stopping service around midnight. Alcohol sales are banned nationwide on poya full-moon days, when even hotel bars close. What scene exists concentrates in Colombo 3 and 7, on rooftops near Galle Face and around Cinnamon Gardens. Beach clubs at Mount Lavinia, a short ride south, run later at weekends.

What to eat in Colombo

Kottu roti is chopped on a griddle to an unmistakable metallic clatter, so follow the sound around Pettah after dark. Hoppers and string hoppers belong to breakfast and late supper, never lunch. Wellawatte's Tamil canteens turn out the best vadai and short eats. For rice and curry with six or seven side dishes, find a local lunch canteen near Slave Island rather than a hotel buffet.

Colombo with kids, realistically

Dehiwala Zoo south of the city and the kite-flying strip on Galle Face Green carry most of a family afternoon. Pavements are broken or absent, which makes a stroller a liability, so carry younger children. Tuk-tuks have no seatbelts or child seats, so book a car through PickMe for longer runs. The Planetarium beside the museum will run shows in English on request.

When the weather turns in Colombo

The southwest monsoon hits from May to September in short violent downpours that flood streets within minutes. Duck into One Galle Face or Colombo City Centre, both with cinemas, or give the National Museum the two hours it needs. Barefoot Garden Cafe on Galle Road combines a bookshop, gallery and covered courtyard. Drainage is slow, so wait it out rather than wading.

When to go to Colombo
