What to eat in Texas Hill Country
Two traditions collide here. German settlement left sausage, schnitzel and biergartens along Fredericksburg's Main Street. Central Texas barbecue is the stronger claim: post-oak-smoked brisket sold by the pound on butcher paper at Cooper's in Llano, where you pick your meat from the open pit outside, and at the Lockhart houses the legislature named the state barbecue capital. Texas Hill Country after dark
The dance hall is the institution, and Gruene Hall in New Braunfels has run continuously since 1878 with no air conditioning and a screen-door back wall open to the night. Luckenbach hosts picker circles under the oaks most afternoons that drift into evening. Fredericksburg's tasting rooms stop pouring around five or six, and outside the halls the Hill Country is asleep by ten.
What's actually worth your time in Texas Hill Country
Enchanted Rock is the landmark, a pink granite dome charging eight dollars for adults with under-twelves free, open from half past six in the morning, and it turns cars away when the lot fills, so reserve a day pass online. The LBJ Ranch at Stonewall charges nothing but needs a free driving permit from the state park visitor centre on Highway 290. Luckenbach is a dance hall and a post office.
Texas Hill Country's museums, and which one to pick
Several Fredericksburg blocks around the Nimitz Hotel, the steamboat-shaped building run by Chester Nimitz's grandfather, are given over to the National Museum of the Pacific War, the only museum in the continental United States devoted solely to the Pacific theatre. It holds a Japanese midget submarine recovered from Pearl Harbor and a combat zone where volunteers stage live-fire demonstrations. The Pioneer Museum covers the German settlers' Sunday Houses.
