Texas Hill Country with kids, realistically
Natural Bridge Caverns and a drive-through wildlife ranch sit beside each other off I-35 and pair into one day. Tubing the Comal in New Braunfels is shorter, calmer and better for younger children than the Guadalupe. What to eat in Texas Hill Country
Two traditions collide here. German settlement left sausage, schnitzel and biergartens along Fredericksburg's Main Street. Central Texas barbecue is the stronger claim: post-oak-smoked brisket sold by the pound on butcher paper at Cooper's in Llano, where you pick your meat from the open pit outside, and at the Lockhart houses the legislature named the state barbecue capital. Gillespie County peaches ripen May to July.
