Corfu hotels: how to choose
Corfu’s hotel market is really three markets that barely overlap: small boutique conversions inside the Venetian Old Town, large seasonal resorts along the coasts, and the cheap package blocks of the far north. Match the market to your dates first — a huge share of the island’s rooms simply do not operate outside roughly May to October — then match it to your area.
What hotels are like, by area
Corfu Town (Kerkyra)
Boutique hotels and guesthouses inside tall, narrow Venetian blocks, plus a few grand old properties facing the Spianada. Characterful, walkable, and the only genuinely year-round option on the island.
Nightly feel: Mid-to-high, and it does not collapse in the shoulder season the way resort pricing does.
Kanoni, Perama & Benitses
Mid-size sea-view hotels overlooking the lagoon and the old harbour, a short bus ride from town. Reliable rather than romantic.
Nightly feel: Mid; often the best value-per-view on the island.
Gouvia, Dassia & Ipsos
The densest concentration of family resorts, all-inclusive properties and mid-range beach hotels, with watersports and the marina attached.
Nightly feel: Mid, spiking hard in late July and August.
Kassiopi & the northeast coves
Small luxury hotels, boutique properties above the coves and a great many private villas — the low-density, high-price end of Corfu.
Nightly feel: High; the island’s premium band, and it assumes you have a car.
Paleokastritsa & the west coast
Cliffside hotels with dramatic outlooks at Paleokastritsa, plus low-rise beach hotels and apartments along the Glyfada and Agios Gordios sand.
Nightly feel: Mid; the view premium is real at Paleokastritsa.
Sidari, Roda & Acharavi
Large, plainly finished package hotels and apartment blocks aimed at the charter market — the cheapest beds on Corfu, and the most seasonal.
Nightly feel: Budget; almost entirely shut from November to April.
What surprises first-time hotel bookers
- Most coastal hotels are seasonal. If you are travelling between November and March, assume the resorts are closed and plan a Corfu Town trip instead of a beach one.
- August is the wall — the Italian and Greek holiday peak lands on top of the northern-European charter season, and both price and occupancy jump well beyond the July level.
- Orthodox Easter is Corfu’s other peak, and the date moves every year. The island’s Holy Saturday botides (clay pots hurled from Liston balconies) draw a large domestic crowd, and Corfu Town rooms sell out months ahead.
- Old Town buildings are tall, narrow and old: steep staircases, no lift and small rooms are common in exactly the hotels with the most character. Ask directly if stairs or heavy luggage are a concern.
- The Old Town is largely pedestrianised and the surrounding street parking is paid blue-line. If you are hiring a car, confirm the hotel has parking or names a nearby lot — do not assume.
- Air conditioning is standard in season but verify it in older town conversions, and be sceptical of a “sea view” on a resort strip where the sea view and the main-road view are the same window.
- A per-night climate-resilience levy on accommodation is charged at check-in on top of the rate and varies by property type and season — it is not in the price you compare online.
When to book
Book late July and August, and Orthodox Easter, several months ahead — those are the only genuinely scarce windows, and hire cars run out before hotels do. May, June and September are the value sweet spot, with warm sea, open resorts and prices well below the August level; October is cheaper again but increasingly wet, and properties start closing through the month. Prefer free-cancellation rates: Corfu inventory moves around a lot in the shoulder months as operators confirm their season.
