Buy and validate before boarding: a single is 500 Ft, a 24-hour Budapest travelcard 2,750 Ft, and inspectors work the metro escalator exits in numbers. Steer clear of the bars near the ruin quarter that lure solo men inside, where the inflated-bill scams are long-running and well documented. Tipping runs about ten per cent and is often already added as service. Order taxis rather than hailing them.

Budapest with kids, realistically
Metro line 1, the little yellow Millennium line running since 1896, is shallow, short and a hit with small children, though its original stations have stairs only. Trams 4 and 6 are low-floor and run through the night. The zoo and the Varosliget boating lake share a park with the Szechenyi baths, which admit children but not to every pool. The Children's Railway in the Buda hills suits six upward.
What to eat in Budapest
Order gulyas as the soup it actually is, then porkolt when you want the stew. The Great Market Hall's ground floor sells paprika and kolbasz while the upper gallery fries langos for tourists; the better version is at Retro Langos Bufe near Arany Janos utca. Halaszle, the fiery river fish soup, is the underrated order, and Dobos torta closes the meal.
Budapest after dark
The ruin bars began when Szimpla Kert took over a derelict Jewish Quarter tenement, and District VII still runs on that model of mismatched furniture, courtyards and crowds until dawn. Instant-Fogas is the sprawling one. Summer shifts outdoors to Hajogyari island and the Romai part riverbank. Palinka rounds are ritual, and clinking beer glasses is still quietly frowned upon.
