Parliament's interior opens only on guided tours in fixed languages, and slots sell out days ahead, so book before you arrive. Fisherman's Bastion charges for the upper turrets although the lower terraces give the same Danube view for free. Szechenyi and Gellert baths are the real attraction. Heroes' Square rewards ten minutes and no more, and the Castle funicular costs more than lunch for a climb you can walk.
Budapest's museums, and which one to pick
The House of Terror on Andrassy ut occupies the building both the Arrow Cross and the communist secret police used, and the basement cells are the point; it closes Mondays. The Hungarian National Gallery inside Buda Castle holds Munkacsy and Csontvary. The Museum of Fine Arts has its Old Masters and restored Romanesque Hall back. Hospital in the Rock, a wartime bunker under Buda, is guided-tour only.
Budapest after dark
The ruin bars began when Szimpla Kert took over a derelict Jewish Quarter tenement, and District VII still runs on that model of mismatched furniture, courtyards and crowds until dawn. What to eat in Budapest

Budapest with kids, realistically
Metro line 1, the little yellow Millennium line running since 1896, is shallow, short and a hit with small children, though its original stations have stairs only. Trams 4 and 6 are low-floor and run through the night. The zoo and the Varosliget boating lake share a park with the Szechenyi baths, which admit children but not to every pool. The Children's Railway in the Buda hills suits six upward.
