When the weather turns in Budapest
Rain is an argument for the baths: Szechenyi's outdoor pools are steam-wrapped and better in bad weather than good, and Gellert's Art Nouveau hall is entirely covered. Beyond that, the Hospital in the Rock tunnels, the House of Music's perforated canopy in Varosliget, and the Great Market Hall's two covered floors will fill an afternoon without stepping outside.
Budapest's museums, and which one to pick
The House of Terror on Andrassy ut occupies the building both the Arrow Cross and the communist secret police used, and the basement cells are the point; it closes Mondays. The Hungarian National Gallery inside Buda Castle holds Munkacsy and Csontvary. The Museum of Fine Arts has its Old Masters and restored Romanesque Hall back. Hospital in the Rock, a wartime bunker under Buda, is guided-tour only.
What to eat in Budapest
Order gulyas as the soup it actually is, then porkolt when you want the stew. The Great Market Hall's ground floor sells paprika and kolbasz while the upper gallery fries langos for tourists; the better version is at Retro Langos Bufe near Arany Janos utca. Halaszle, the fiery river fish soup, is the underrated order, and Dobos torta closes the meal.
What's actually worth your time in Budapest
Parliament's interior opens only on guided tours in fixed languages, and slots sell out days ahead, so book before you arrive. Fisherman's Bastion charges for the upper turrets although the lower terraces give the same Danube view for free. Szechenyi and Gellert baths are the real attraction. Heroes' Square rewards ten minutes and no more, and the Castle funicular costs more than lunch for a climb you can walk.
Budapest after dark
The ruin bars began when Szimpla Kert took over a derelict Jewish Quarter tenement, and District VII still runs on that model of mismatched furniture, courtyards and crowds until dawn. Instant-Fogas is the sprawling one. Summer shifts outdoors to Hajogyari island and the Romai part riverbank. Palinka rounds are ritual, and clinking beer glasses is still quietly frowned upon.
