US-98 is the only through road and it gridlocks every summer afternoon; the Mid-Bay Bridge is a faster toll alternative to reach Niceville. Most of the beachfront is condominium property with no public access, so aim for Henderson Beach State Park or James Lee Park rather than assuming a gap between towers. Beach vendors monopolise the front row of sand by dawn.

Henderson Beach State Park charges about six dollars per vehicle. A rented chair-and-umbrella setup runs forty to fifty dollars a day and is the quiet drain on a beach week. What to eat in Destin
Royal red shrimp are the dish worth crossing town for: deepwater shrimp trawled off the continental shelf, sweet and closer to lobster than to Gulf whites, cooked briefly because they overcook in seconds. When it comes, Destin Commons has a cinema, the Air Force Armament Museum costs nothing, the Gulfarium keeps indoor tanks, and Silver Sands in Miramar Beach is one of the larger designer outlet centres in the country. The Emerald Coast Science Center suits younger children.
